NCDOT-RAIL responded to the call for improving grade crossing safety.&nbsp;Among several initiatives was a project to improve rail crossing signage.\u2026<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THE STORY<\/span> &#8211;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> Red Springs &amp; Northern Railroad Foundation, Inc. (RS&amp;N)<\/strong> <\/span>was fortunate to be awarded a grant from <strong>NCDOT-RAIL<\/strong> to upgrade crossing masts (posts) and signs in the incorporated towns located on the <strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> line. Many of the <strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> street crossings have heavy traffic counts, speeding vehicles, large trucks, reduced visibility conditions, and frequent rail work parties on the line. Also, <strong>RS&amp;N\u2019s<\/strong> grade crossing signs and masts were in poor condition due to years of wind, weather and vandalism taking their toll.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-LEANING-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-LEANING-2-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - LEANING 2\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-LEANING.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1585 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-LEANING-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - LEANING\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(Throughout this article, please click on pictures to enlarge.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A number of the old masts and signs probably dated back to the 1960\u2019s, with some of the&nbsp;masts possibly even older &#8211; <em>several of the masts had the old <strong>FRA\/DOT<\/strong> grade crossing metal ID tags with <strong>SCL (Seaboard Coast Line RR)<\/strong> stamped on them<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/September-28-181-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1468 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/September-28-181-2-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"September 28 (181) - 2\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>(<\/em>Notice the small metal plate on the old mast.<em> These particular masts will be saved for a history display in the future,&nbsp;maybe in the new <strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> depot.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thankfully, the <strong>NCDOT-RAIL<\/strong> Grant provided <strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> with much needed replacement masts, signs, reflective mast strips, and payment for each crossing upgraded in the incorporated areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-GROUP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1596\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-GROUP-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - GROUP\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The new signs were assembled and placed in accordance with <strong>FRA<\/strong> and <strong>NCDOT-RAIL <\/strong>specifications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em><u>A HUGE TEAM EFFORT<\/u><\/em> &#8211;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In preparation for the project, Susan Cease evaluated the crossing locations that met the GRANT requirements.&nbsp; Location information was provided to Doug Bedenbaugh, who went into the field and marked (painted) the \u201cspot\u201d for the mast installation.&nbsp; Later, Susan double-checked the locations, communicated with the Town of Red Springs on two unusual locations, and prepared a spread sheet of all the locations that would have new posts and signs.&nbsp; Susan also communicated with the Utility Locating Service (811) and provided them with the exact \u201cspots\u201d.&nbsp; A week <em>prior<\/em> to the work day, the 811 located sites were checked for any obstructions and a \u201cbill\u201d authorizing the digging of the new mast holes was received.&nbsp; <em>There were 14 new mast locations identified for installation.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a rain delay on Friday 9\/25\/2015, a new work day was scheduled for Monday, 9\/28\/2015 at 09:00AM (and we were caught by rain\u2026<em>again! &#8211;<\/em> the work party started in light rain <em>and finished in a downpour<\/em>.) It was determined that the most efficient use of labor and sign materials was to mount the new crossbucks, yield signs and reflective strips on a single mast. This was accomplished by using \u201cin-ground treated\u201d 6in. x 6in. sq. wood posts and a plethora of tools:&nbsp;3 drills, drill bits, ratchets, measuring tapes, marking pens, etc. <em>And LOTS of measuring!!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-MEASURING-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1604 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-MEASURING-2-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - MEASURING 2\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-MEASURING.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1597 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-MEASURING-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - MEASURING\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/September-28-281-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1449 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/September-28-281-2-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"September 28 (281) - 2\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1450 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/September-28-283-2-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"September 28 (283) - 2\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"> &nbsp; &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/September-28-283-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An assembly line production for mounting the signs on the posts was efficiently done at the <strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> engine terminal.&nbsp; By noon, the masts and signage were assembled and loaded on the trailer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-TRAILER.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1649\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-TRAILER-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - TRAILER\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Simultaneously, Milton Lucas worked with several members to \u201cauger\u201d the mast holes at the approved locations on Ginny Lucas&#8217; really <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>BIG<\/em> green tractor<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TRACTOR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1559\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TRACTOR-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"TRACTOR\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Trees and brush were also trimmed and cut down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-BRUSH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1565 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-BRUSH-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - BRUSH\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-TREES.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1570 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-TREES-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - TREES\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, lunch at the Mexican restaurant in Red Springs (oh, <em>yeah<\/em>, baby!! &#8211; GREAT company and the food was excellent!!). Installation of the completed masts continued into the afternoon, using a plethora of equipment: shovels, tampers, a reciprocating saw, weed whippers, chain saws, ladders, Ginny&#8217;s really <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>BIG<\/em> green tractor<\/strong><\/span> with that <em>mean-looking auger<\/em> (yep-yep, <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>that&#8217;s the one!!<\/em><\/strong><\/span>) following behind, and levels completed the installation &#8220;inventory&#8221;. <em>Say &#8220;HI!!&#8221; to Susan Cease, ya&#8217;ll, and her &#8220;new best friend&#8221;, Mr. Level:<a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-MR.-LEVEL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1738 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-MR.-LEVEL-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - MR. LEVEL\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-LEVEL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1652 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-LEVEL-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - LEVEL\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a driving rain, the crew installed the final masts and signs.&nbsp; The old posts and crossbucks were picked up from the various locations and taken to the <strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> engine terminal.<a href=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-DEAD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1639\" src=\"http:\/\/redspringsandnorthern.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/RSN-DEAD-290x220.jpg\" alt=\"RSN - DEAD\" width=\"290\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One full mast installation at Church Street remains in Parkton.&nbsp;(The old mast that we intended to upgrade &#8211; <em>it was upright a week ago!<\/em> &#8211; was lying on the ground,&nbsp;rotted at the base.)&nbsp;In addition to Parkton, the three old steel masts in downtown Red Springs will be receiving new yield signs and vertical reflective strips, requiring a different method of mounting. Susan hopes to finish this intersection Saturday, October 3, 2015, weather permitting &#8211; <em>looks like rain, though &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">again<\/span>!!!<\/em> At this present time, there is one all-new mast at that location, the old one having been removed years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em><u>IN CONCLUSION<\/u><\/em> &#8211;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All told, <em><strong>RS&amp;N<\/strong> upgraded 14 locations in a single day<\/em>.&nbsp;
